Mr. T.R. Benning was born in Atlanta, Georgia, May 27, 1921, the son of T.R. Benning, Sr. of Atlanta, Georgia and Gertrude Acton Landon of Bluefield West Virginia. He was educated in the public schools of Atlanta, Georgia and Fulton County, Georgia. He is a graduate of Auburn University, Class of 1943, with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree. Upon graduation, he worked as a Project Engineer on air base construction until called to active duty in the Army.
Lt. Benning served as an Officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, European Theater Operation, World War II for 2 1/2 years. He received a Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star.
He entered a full-time construction career in 1946 as a Job Superintendent and progressed to General Superintendent, Estimator, Project Manager, and Executive. Projects included highway, heavy, and commercial construction.
In 1953, in association with his father, he incorporated Benning Construction Company, a commercial and industrial General Contractor. Through its history, Mr. T.R. Benning has served as Secretary/Treasurer (1953-1960); Vice President and Treasurer (1961-1968); President (1968-1992); and, Chairman of the Board (1992-present).
During this period, Benning Construction Company has built numerous commercial, institutional, and industrial structures, including retail stores and shopping centers, warehouses, light manufacturing plants, office parks and office buildings, churches, and motion picture theatres including, in most cases, site work associated with these projects.
